| Desktop computers will soon be 'irrelevant', says Google |
Google says that the days of desktop computer as we know it are numbered. John Herlihy, the vice-president of Global Ad Operations, told the Digital Landscapes Conference in Dublin that the future of computing was mobile and through the web browser.
“In three years time, desktops will be irrelevant. In Japan, most research is done today on smart phones, not PCs,” he told the conference.
His comments echo the views of Google chief executive Eric Schmidt. Mr Schmidt has previously announced that the company now considers itself to be “mobile first”.

Google’s focus on mobile search is reflected in its Android mobile operating system, which places a search box on the main homescreen, allowing users to search both the phone itself and the internet from a single place.
The company’s web browser, Chrome, also uses search as the focus for computing. Later this year, Google will launch Chrome OS, in association with computer manufacturers, and that too will promote search and the web browser as the main way via which computers will operate.
